2G and 3G Sunsets: What It Means for IoT Devices?
Mobile operators are gradually closing down 2G and 3G networks worldwide. It is often also referred to as 2G and 3G sunset. The primary reason behind these closures is to free up space for newer and more advanced technologies like 5G. Sunsets of the older networks can happen at different times in different countries. For example, in the USA, the majority of operators have already closed the services, while in Europe operators are planning to continue the services until the end of 2025, if not longer. Closure dates are usually announced by mobile operators on their communication channels or in public media.
While the closures may initially seem like a negative development, they are actually beneficial in the long run. By retiring outdated networks, mobile operators are able to allocate more resources towards building and upgrading to the latest 5G technology. This means that consumers will have access to faster and more reliable internet speeds, lower latency, and increased network capacity. In addition, the shift to 5G is more power efficient and allows for more innovative IoT applications and devices to be developed, which will ultimately benefit both consumers and businesses.
Comodule is keeping a close eye on these closures and is taking proactive measures to ensure the smooth operation of its IoT devices. In cases where the closure of 2G and 3G networks could negatively impact the performance of our devices, we will directly contact our customers. This is especially relevant for older products that are not supported by the newer LTE-M network.
